Overview

The preserve is approximately 2 miles R/T and is considered to be a moderate trail. The trail is great for nature lovers and photographers. The trail features large boulders, many waterfall cascades, wildlife and wildflowers in the spring.

Directions from Ponca

Head south on HWY 43 for 4.8 miles and continue onto HWY 21 South. Continue on HWY 21 South for 3.7 miles and the entrance for Smith Creek Nature Preserve will be on your left.

More than a Walk in the Woods

Smith Creek Preserve may be the ultimate Buffalo River Country nature walk. The trails that run through Smith Creek Preserve will bring you by house-sized boulders, cascades, bluffs, sink-holes, springs ands so much more. Additionally, the trail and creek are lined with wildflowers in the springtime and are absolutely beautiful under a canopy of color in the Fall.

What's Below Your Feet

Smith Creek Preserve sits on top of Sherfield Cave. Each winter this Cave is home to the largest colony of Indiana bats in the state!

A Great Spot for a Picnic

If you follow the main trail from the parking area, the trail will take you down to Smith Creek and a picnic table will be on your right. It is a beautiful and serene area. In other words, be sure to pack a lunch for the perfect afternoon picnic.
